Fracture of the proximal humerus, most commonly at the surgical neck. Accounts for 5-6% of all fractures. Bimodal distribution: young males (high-energy trauma) and elderly females (low-energy fall + osteoporosis). Neer classification based on displacement of 4 segments. 80% are minimally displaced and managed conservatively.
