Cauda Equina Syndrome
Nerve Emergency in Lower Back (EMERGENCY)
Compression of the cauda equina nerve roots: a NEUROSURGICAL EMERGENCY. Most commonly caused by large central disc herniation. Can also result from tumour, abscess, haematoma, or severe stenosis. Incidence: 1-3 per 100,000. Must be decompressed within 24-48 hours (ideally <24h) to prevent permanent neurological damage including permanent bladder/bowel/sexual dysfunction.
