Lateral dislocation of the patella from the trochlear groove. First-time dislocations usually traumatic (twisting on a flexed knee, direct blow to medial patella). Recurrence rate 15-45% after first dislocation. Risk factors for recurrence: trochlear dysplasia, patella alta, increased TT-TG distance, generalised laxity, young age. MPFL (medial patellofemoral ligament) tears in 100% of acute dislocations.
