AVN of Femoral Head
Hip Bone Dying (Blood Supply Lost)
Avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis) of the femoral head: bone death from disrupted blood supply. 10,000-20,000 new cases/year in US. Bilateral in 55-80%. Peak age 30-50. If untreated, progresses to femoral head collapse and secondary OA requiring total hip replacement. Risk factors: corticosteroids (most common non-traumatic cause), alcohol, SLE, sickle cell, HIV, Gaucher's, trauma (femoral neck fracture).
