High Ankle Sprain
Injury to the inferior tibiofibular syndesmosis (anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament: AITFL, posterior inferior: PITFL, interosseous membrane, transverse ligament). External rotation and/or dorsiflexion mechanism. Takes 2-3x longer to recover than lateral ankle sprain. Common in football, rugby, skiing. Often missed initially.
